Computer Networks: Sample Question for Midterm-2
Try solving the Packet Tracer Activity. You will need Packet Tracer to open the file (check the bottom of the post for download link).
- There will be two windows: a large one (contains the network topology) and a small window.
1. In the first (small) window, enter your name. Email not needed. Then click OK.

CSE-3114/ CSE-3116: Basic Router Configuration via CLI
Today we are going to explore some basic Router configuration commands. We shall use Packet Tracer for this purpose. If you don't have it already, check this post: Computer Networks Introduction.
Those of you need a little more familiarization with Packet Tracer, check this post.
Steps to follow:
1. Open Packet Tracer and place a Router in the workspace. Use a 'Generic' model.

Basic LAN Configuration - Practice Topology
Download the Cisco Packet Tracer file (.pkt) and configure the Laptops and Desktops so that they all can communicate with each other.
Download .pkt file
Rules:
How to proceed:
1. Connect the Desktops and Laptops with appropriate cables with the switch. Use FastEthernet ports.
Download .pkt file
Rules:
- Use your assigned IP address given in class.
- Find (a) Network address, (b) Broadcast address, (c) Total number of users, (d) First user's IP address and (e) Last user's IP address.
- After the completion of configuration, use ping command to check connectivity.
- Save the file and send it to me via Email (nsadat@live.com) or Facebook.

Understanding HDB (High Density Bipolar) Coding
High-Density Bipolar or HDB Coding is used mainly for Bandwidth compression. Using this coding system, we eliminate a large number of consecutive zeros and replace them with certain codes.
Here, HDB3 and HDB4 will be discussed. Follow each step and you should have no problems understanding the process.
Step 1: For HDB3, (3+1)=4 zeros and for HDB4, (4+1)=5 zeros will be replaced with code.
